About us

Building Healthy Individuals & Healthy Families

The British Columbia Borstal Association is a not-for-profit, charitable organization that has been investing in community safety from a trauma-informed lens since 1948. We understand that trauma has a significant impact and the opportunity for prevention, intervention, and aftercare are imperative to support both individual and community wellness.

Our Vision

Building resiliency and healthier communities with less trauma and greater peace.

Our Mission

To improve personal and community wellness by providing treatment, support and education to British Columbians impacted by trauma.

Our Values

Commitment to Truth and Reconciliation

We acknowledge the impact on Indigenous peoples of residential schools and the systemic racism embedded in Canadian institutions, including the justice system. We acknowledge our part in those systems and, despite our best efforts, have often failed to prevent or alleviate the trauma experienced by those we serve. We accept the calls to action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (and other related reports). We commit ourselves, with humility, to be responsible for our own learning, to build relationships, and where possible to contribute to the journey of Reconciliation. We hope there will be practical ways to use our knowledge and expertise in support of Indigenous organizations and communities.

Leadership Team

An effective Board is vital to the operation of any not-for-profit organization. The British Columbia Borstal Association is governed by a dedicated volunteer Board of Directors. The Board of Directors is instrumental in the following capacities:

  1. Determining the organization’s mission, vision and values
  2. Developing current and future leaders, both Executive & Board
  3. Ensuring financial longevity through its fiduciary responsibilities (fund acquisition, budgeting, audits, financial oversight)
  4. Determining and monitoring the organization’s programs and services
  5. Serving as strategic planning partners, setting policy and direction
  6. Ensuring legal and ethical integrity and accountability
